Featuring tips, treats, and Samoyed sweetness from Eskimoyed Samoyeds
Easter is a time for joy, colourful eggs, family gatherings, and of course… chocolate. But while the Easter Bunny is busy delivering sweet surprises, it’s important to remember that chocolate and dogs don’t mix—especially with curious, fluff-covered mischief-makers like the Samoyed! 🐰🐶
At Eskimoyed Samoyeds, we LOVE celebrating holidays with our pups—but we also know the risks that can come with all the seasonal treats. So, let’s dive into how to enjoy an Easter filled with smiles, safe snacks, and Samoyed shenanigans.
Dogs are naturally attracted to chocolate because of its rich smell, sweet taste, and high fat content. Although dogs can’t taste sweetness the same way humans do, the combination of sugar, cocoa butter, and dairy makes chocolate highly appealing to their powerful sense of smell.
Unfortunately, while dogs might love the way chocolate smells and tastes, it contains theobromine, a compound that is toxic to dogs, just a small amount can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, increased heart rate, seizures—or worse. Many dogs will eat chocolate if given the chance, which is why it’s so important to keep Easter treats and other chocolate products safely out of reach.
Type of Chocolate | Toxic Dose (mg/kg) | Approximate Amount per kg of Dog |
Milk Chocolate | 44–58 mg/kg | ~20g per kg body weight |
Dark Chocolate | 130–180 mg/kg | ~5g per kg body weight |
Baking Chocolate | 390–450 mg/kg | ~2g per kg body weight |
For a 20kg Samoyed, 100g of dark chocolate could lead to serious illness.
💡 Pro Tip: If your dog eats chocolate, contact your vet immediately—don’t wait for symptoms to show.
💡Pro Tip: While inducing vomiting in dogs is sometimes necessary in emergencies—like accidental chocolate ingestion—it’s not always the safest first step and should only be done with extreme care and under the guidance with an emergency veterinarian. Easter is a sensory overload—new smells, shiny wrappers, sugar highs (for humans), and suspicious-looking bunnies. Here’s how to keep your dog safe and happy during the festivities:
Secure the chocolate: Store it high and out of reach—Samoyeds are clever and sneaky!
No plastic eggs: Avoid plastic eggs with treats inside—they can become choking hazards.
Decorate wisely: Keep tinsel, plastic grass, and foil wrappers off the ground (they look fun to chew).
Supervise egg hunts: Let your pup join in with safe toys or scent-based games, but keep the chocolate eggs for the humans.
Beware of guests’ bags: Kids often carry surprise snacks—be vigilant if you’re hosting.
Let Your Samoyed Join the Fun!
Samoyeds are naturally joyful, sociable, and oh-so-photo-ready. Easter is a great time for them to shine! Dress your floof in a soft bunny headband or pastel bandana, set up a mini photo booth, and have your own #SamoyedEasterParade! 📸
At Eskimoyed Samoyeds, our dogs love participating in egg-hunts designed just for them, using hidden toys or dehydrated meat treats. Watching a Samoyed sniff out hidden goodies is truly one of life’s greatest pleasures!
Let your pup join the treat train with this super easy dog-safe chocolate alternative made with carob—a naturally sweet, theobromine-free ingredient.
Ingredients:
1 cup rolled oats
1/4 cup carob powder (NOT cocoa!)
2 tbsp natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)
1 tbsp honey
1/4 cup warm water
Instructions:
Blend oats into a fine powder using a food processor.
Mix in carob powder, peanut butter, honey, and water until a dough forms.
Roll into little egg shapes or use fun Easter molds.
Refrigerate for 30 minutes to firm up.
These bites are fridge-safe for 5 days or freezer-friendly for longer-lasting goodies.
Let’s face it—not every dog thinks the Easter Bunny is cute. Some might bark, others might try to make a friend (or snack?) out of that floppy-eared visitor.
If you’re planning a costumed appearance for kids, be sure to introduce your Samoyed to the Bunny slowly and gently. With their loyal and playful temperament, most Sammies adjust well—just don’t be surprised if they want to herd the bunny around the yard!
